Heeeey everyone, I know I haven't posted in a while, I've been pretty busy. But here's a how-to on a project I worked on for most of the past week, and it is all done from my Mac. Now, I'm writing this tutorial because for me to get the results I wanted on my iPod, I had to do many hours of research and took from bits of several tutorials to get it done. So let's make this one simple and easy! And don't worry; if you're a windows user, you may just have to change the program you use in the first step to do the jailbreaking-- everything else is done from your device. Enjoy!
Step OneOkay, so, step one. To jailbreak my iPod touch and several iPhones, I used iJailBreak. This can be downloaded for your Mac
here. This program was written by a 13 year-old, is extremely easy to use, and is one-click. Not to mention you can also use it to get the upgrade pack (iPhone apps) for free. For Windows, I believe you can use
ZiPhone. Be sure to click the Windows version install at that link. Should also be simple; I just preferred iJailBreak.
Okay, so once you have iJailBreak installed, here's what you do. First, connect your iPod touch or iPhone.
Make sure your device is updated to 1.1.4. If iTunes does not open automatically, open it and check. With your device highlighted on the left, you should see this on the right:
[click to enlarge]When your device is updated to 1.1.4, feel free to either leave it in iTunes, eject it from iTunes, close iTunes, whatever. It never seemed to matter; though I like to eject and exit. Now, open iJailBreak, and you will see this:
[click to enlarge]Simply click the big green downward arrow in the top left corner where it says "JailBreak", and let the program do its thing. As it says on the app page, you'll see text flying upward on the display of your device. Looks pretty awesome, actually.
When it's all said and done, iJailBreak will tell you to enjoy your jailbroken device. Alternatively, when you start the jailbreak on your iPhone, it will also give you the option to unlock it. I haven't tried this, but I'm sure it works.
Anyway, for now, you're done with the Mac. Disconnect your device and be sure you can have it online via wifi connection.
Step TwoNow that your device is jailbroken and online, it's time for the fun!
You'll notice by now that jailbreaking your device put a new icon on your springboard. It's blue, and it is called Installer. This is going to be your best friend!
Opening installer for the first time, it may refresh your sources; during which time it would tell you this on the bottom of the screen with a little progress bar. If not, use the "sources" icon on the bottom right to go to that tab. In the top left of the sources page, hit refresh.

After this, assuming Installer 3.0 is installed, it will prompt for an update. Update it, it's important. Installer will exit after the update. Open it again, and now it is time to install some other necessities. On that bottom row, press the icon with the "+" on it, labeled Install. Scroll down to the "System" category. Here, go to the package called BSD Subsystem; you will need that installed for later. Press install in the top right, and install again.
You'll notice, each time you install something, it will bring you back to the main install page, with the categories. This is because each time you go back into a category, it will no longer display packages that you have already installed. Another two packages I recommend installing from the Systems category would be OpenSSH, and SummerBoard. OpenSSH allows you to access your device through an FTP application from your Mac or PC, which you may find handy later for other types of installations. SummerBoard is great, as it allows you to have different themes for your SpringBoard (home screen)! Most themes include wallpaper and cool icons for most common apps.
To go along with SummerBoard, you'll need a little tweak. Back on the main Install page, go to the "Tweaks 1.1.3" category. Install the package called 1.1.3/4 Theme Fix. You'll thank me; it seemed before I found this that nearly half of the uploaded SummerBoard themes didn't not work without this patch. Install!
By now, you may be pretty comfortable with installing packages. You'll see a category called "Themes (Summerboard)". Go in there, and you'll have lots of themes to choose from! But it doesn't stop there. The sources tab displays the different sources from which you can find and install all these packages. So, the more sources you add, the more choices you have of things to install.
So on the Install tab, scroll to the "Sources" category. Add some nice sources! I found it useful to add: Bigboss's Recommended Sources, Community Sources, and iPodTouchFans BETA. If there have been any packages that you could not find while you were earlier in this tutorial, try installing these sources and you may find them. Here is one of my favorite SummerBoard themes that I have installed (Sunshine by DustLonely):
Step ThreeNow that you have a lot of the necessities packed away, and you've gotten familiar with Installer, it's time for some real results. Despite the fact that my labels are hidden, you may have noticed in the shot of my SpringBoard the NES icon next to the PlayStation one. Yes, NES and PlayStation!
Let's install NES. Open Installer of course. In the Games category of the Install tab, scroll down to NES and install it. Now, go to your sources tab. Press Edit in the top right corner. Now, Press Add in the top left. Add this source as I have shown here: 123locker.com

Now, press Done in the top right corner. It will refresh your sources,
but http://123locker.com will most likely NOT show up in the list of your sources. I don't know why this is, but it frustrated me to no end the first night after I had jailbroken my iPod. I woke up and found out that even though it wasn't listed in the sources list, it still gave me the packages that are hosted from this source.
Now, back to the Install tab. Now go to Games again, and there will be an NES ROMs package waiting for you! It took a while to track down a source that actually hosts this pack, so hurry and download/install it before it disappears and some other source picks it up in the future. It's valuable because otherwise, you will be connecting to your device via an FTP program and SSH like I mentioned before, and loading ROMs into a folder one by one manually. After you find a good site for ROMs, of course. Pain! Just install that package, you'll be happy.
Now go back to your homescreen and wait for it to reload, blahblah. You should see your NES icon like mine. Open it, and your list of ROMs should be there for you to choose from, in alphabetical order! See below.

NES can be played vertically and horizontally.

As for the PlayStation emulator I have installed, that's just because I can. You can find it as psx4all in the Games category in Installer, but from what I've heard and seen, psx ROMs lag horribly on the iPod and iPhone. They are constantly updating the emulators to eliminate such problems, but for now it is still slow. As for installing those ROMs, they would be installed manually through SSH.. we'll see if they make any development in that area.
Step FourHow about some games outside of NES? Or utilities, themes, multimedia, network stuff, toys, etc? I'll share with you some of my favorites that I have installed so far.
Games that I have installed and that I enjoy, include:
ContraSense
Domino
genesis4iPhone (Again, just because I can)
gpSPhone (You know the drill)
iPhysics (Oh, you have to see this one, I'll show some stuff)
iSlots
Labyrinth
Pool
Sudoku
In the Network category, I have iShare and My eBay, which is handy.
There are so many great SummerBoard themes out there, and many of my favorite are by DustLonely. I have too many installed to list, but some of my favorites are
1984
Black Wood
Bright Acrylic
Burger King
China Wind and China Wind 2
Chrono Trigger
Dark Apple
Doodles (Great one!)
Doraemon
DustLonely
Katamari
Little Dream
Monodrome Theme Pack
Moonlight
Naruto
NBA
NHL
Not Louis Vuitton
Notepad
Polaroid (Another great one!)
PSP Eclipse (remix)
Simple Sky
Sunshine (As shown earlier in the tutorial)
Super Nova (Nice)
unL0CkER
Now, toys are pretty great. Check out the Toys category, here are some that I've tried so far and like:
Ants (So great)
EvolutionRGB
Magic8
Moo
Multitouch
Waves
Lastly, here are some utilities I have installed.
iTrac (haven't tried yet but seems handy)
ScreenShot
SysInfo
ThemeBuilder (again, haven't tried yet)
Some Last ScreenshotsiPhysics didn't like me taking screenshots, but check out the iPhysics category in Installer-- there's a lot of levels to choose from and it is fun.
Look close, there's three little ants crawling around on the screen. They walk quite realistically, and make for a great prank! Plus they're squishable.

ContraSense - This is fun, uses the accelerometer.

Domino

Doodles SummerBoard theme

Pool

Slots

Waves - also, a nice overlaying prank, and fun!

More coming later as I find stuff! I hope you have found my tutorial helpful.
Make sure to donate to the authors of any programs that you really like, as well as the author behind Installer! And even to me, if you'd like! hahaha~
but really.
:'] That took all day in and out of work. HAPPY
